Nerve Conduction Studies

NCS

The Goals of Nerve Conduction Studies are as follows:

 

A. Localization of the lesion in the:
1. Nerve – mononeuropathy, mononeuritis multiplex, polyneuropathy, plexopathy, radiculopathy, polyradiculopathy, neuronopathy
 
2. Neuromuscular junction  - presynaptic, postsynaptic
 
3. Muscle
Underlying nerve pathophysiology
Fiber type involved – motor, sensory, motor and sensory
Pathology – primary demylination (acquire or inherited)
Primary axonal loss
 
B.  Assessment of severity – correlation with clinical symptoms
 
C.  Assessment of temporal course -Hyperacute, Acute, Subacute  or Chronic

 The central role of NCS and EMG is  in evaluating patients with neuromuscular disorder. It used in the diagnosis of peripheral nervous system disorders.  It provides useful information in disorders of the central system (eg. Tremor or upper motor neuron weakness)
